River Axe Race - Sunday 7th March 2010
This popular
race is an excellent introduction to canoe racing and
also provides a challenge for the more experienced
paddler. All classes are open to paddlers with
disabilities.
The race starts
5 miles south of Axminster at Whitford Bridge M/R
263953. The river Axe twists and winds its way through
the Axe Valley for 4 miles before opening out onto the
estuary, with a further 1 mile of racing to the finish
at Axmouth Harbour (Axe Yacht Club Seaton).
This year it was a lovely sunny day, with a cold breeze.
A total of 115 paddlers entered in 96 canoes and kayaks
with entrants ranged from under 14 to over 80 years in
age. A special Super
Veterans medal was given to Brian Massey who at 85 years
young has entered this race every year for the past
twenty years.
