Canoe (Canadian style)

Canoe One Star BCU

We expect to run a beginners course again in May 2012 for young people and adults interested in learning how to paddle a Canadian Canoe. Once you have passed this course you will be able join the club. The sessions will be run by qualified BCU coaches; canoes and all other equipment will be supplied.

The details of the 2011 course are shown below as a guide to what the 2012 course is likely to be like. The course consisted of 5 sessions which are held on Tuesday evenings on the estuary in Seaton.

All participants must be able to swim 50 metres, although for assistance, buoyancy aids will be provided. Minimum Age is 11 years old. The club insurance covers third party liability but not personal accident.

Venue:     Axe Vale Canoe Club, Axmouth Harbour, Seaton
Dates:     Course 1 - five consecutive week from start of May - COMPLETED
Times:     Meet at 6:00 pm at the Club House, Seaton.
We will be off the water at 9:00 pm
Cost:       £60 (in 2011)

In order to pass this course, participants will need to attend all five sessions.
You will need to bring suitable clothing and shoes – thin fleece, thermal top (man-made fibre), tracksuit bottoms, lace-up shoes you don’t mind getting wet – and a towel for a shower when you get off the water. We will provide all the other kit and equipment you need.

On successful completion participants will gain a BCU 1 star qualification and will be able to join the club and continue to attend on Tuesday evenings and progress their skills as well as take part in a number of trips which will be planned for the weekends.

Places are limited so early application is strongly advised.

Canoe Improvers

Canoe Improvers can become club members and continue with their progression towards
2-Star awards on Tuesday evenings. The new 2-Star suggests you need to be proficient in both canoe and kayak so we re pondering how that suits people's wishes...

The Open Canoe Weekend in July (2011) offers a three-day varied programme of skill development (1 to 3 Star), scenic paddles along the Jurassic coast - and of course, a chance to meet and renew friendships.

Learn to Roll Sessions

Sessions are held at the Flamingo Pool in Axminster on Friday evenings, usually in September/October each year. See the Winter Programme for details.
